Our students deserve great learning environments.
Our city deserves great buildings.
We all know that strong public education is the foundation of equity, opportunity, and community well-being. This February, Port Townsend voters have the chance to invest in safer, healthier, and more future-ready schools by supporting Proposition 1, the Port Townsend School District’s 2026 Capital Bond.
What Proposition 1 Provides
The proposed bond invests $99.25 million, with state assistance available only if the bond passes, to:
• Renovate and expand the historic high school’s Main Building
• Remove the deteriorated Annex
• Improve seismic safety across the campus
• Modernize labs, shops, and learning spaces
• Improve natural light, energy efficiency, and accessibility
• Upgrade the gym and essential building systems
• Improve traffic flow, parking, sidewalks, and campus security
• Create a permanent, fully renovated home for OCEAN School at the Gael Stuart Building
This plan preserves the historic character of the uptown campus while modernizing interiors to serve thousands of students over the next 50 years.
Why Now?
This campus is approaching its 100th year, and is the district’s oldest and least updated campus. While students and staff continue to excel academically, the buildings themselves fall short of modern standards. Independent assessments show critical needs in seismic safety, accessibility, energy efficiency, and classroom functionality, particularly in science, technology, and career-technical programs. Many issues can no longer be addressed with temporary repairs.
Help our students realize the district’s promise to be excited, supported and engaged, and graduate with the skills to thrive in the world and change it for the better.
